The United Kingdom experiences distinct seasonal shifts that heavily impact vehicle maintenance. Adapting your care routine helps manage these specific environmental challenges.
Winter
Winter brings the harshest conditions. Lower temperatures reduce the effectiveness of cleaning chemicals, while road gritters spread highly corrosive salt.
Focus: Frequent pre-washing is vital. Flushing wheel arches and lower body panels to remove salt buildup is more critical than a perfect aesthetic finish during these months. Topping up protection (like a quick detailer or spray sealant) during warmer dry spells can help.
Spring
Spring requires recovery from winter. It also introduces high pollen counts and sticky tree sap as foliage returns.
Focus: A deep decontamination wash is often beneficial to clear embedded winter grime. Pollen can be abrasive if wiped dry; always use proper wash methods to remove it. Dealing with bird droppings promptly becomes important as temperatures begin to rise.
Summer
Warmer weather means drier, dustier roads and a significant increase in insect impacts on the front bumper and windscreen. Higher UV exposure can also affect unprotected plastics and paint.
Focus: Using dedicated, safe bug removers as a pre-wash step. Washing should ideally be done in the shade or early/late in the day to prevent water spots and chemical drying on hot panels.
Autumn
Increased rainfall, decaying leaves, and dampness characterize autumn. Leaves contain tannins that can stain clear coat if left for extended periods.
Focus: Clearing leaves from scuttle panels (below the windscreen) to prevent water drainage blockages. Applying a solid layer of protection before winter sets in is highly recommended.
